Giulio Alfieri was given the task of designing an all-new racing car chassis. This was a daunting project
because it was clear that the rules for competitiveness were rapidly changing at that time. Despite all difficulties the Birdcage
Maseratis may qualify as the ultimate weapons-grade, front-engine sports racers, and they need to be understood as such.
In opposition with Europeans, Americans tended more toward sprint races with time between to fix things, so Birdcages had a better
record in the United States.

The California Spyder was motivated by U.S. distributors Jon von Neumann and Luigi Chinetti who convinced
Ferrari to create a performance convertible named after their best market. The California Spyder emerged with supercar performance
and became highly desirable due to its limited availability. Each car was special too, and some examples came with competition-spec
engines or the very rare factory hard top.
The “Ferrari 250 LWB California” was created by the Modena designer Sergio Scaglietti, who
is the idea man behind all “berlinette” and “spider” from Ferrari in the years from 1960 to 1993.
